Aaron was the most inspirational little boy, loved by so many people, with such an infectious smile and cheeky personality to match. Heartbreakingly, he lost his three-year battle to a high-grade brain tumor in April 2023, aged just 7. He was, and remains to be, our golden superhero. And, with a loyal following of family, friends and supporters, 'Aaron's Army' has been created in his memory.
At the age of 4, in April 2020, Aaron was diagnosed with a very rare, very aggressive high grade brain tumor (Anaplastic Ependymoma of the Posterior Fossa). As parents, we were completely aware of the seriousness of the situation we found ourselves in, but vowed to take whatever treatment options were offered to us at the time.
Aaron had to receive chemotherapy, proton and photon radiotherapy, and surgeries, not once, but numerous times in that three-year period. He absolutely powered through all of these procedures, and was so proud (as were we all) to ring that bell at the end of his treatment. He started school, but the cancer continued to return, forcing him to return to treatments that would ravage his immune system.
He loved being in school the most, surrounded by his friends, being a normal little boy. Which made it all the harder when we learnt that, in September of 2022, the cancer had once again returned. Not only multiple tumors at the original site, but this time spreading to the top of his head, within his ventricles. We were told that there was no longer any further curative treatment available. And it was our absolute worst nightmare.
Despite more treatment, by January 2023, it was discovered that the tumor removed only a few months before had regrown, and significantly so. All treatment was stopped, and we needed to start preparing ourselves. We showered Aaron with love, experiences, trips away, trying to squeeze in as much as we could, in a time frame that was unknown. It was so fitting that, in his final days with us, we were able to spend together, in a place that he loved so dearly, with memories that we hold fondly.
We are now continuing Aaron's fight, his legacy, through his Army. It is simply not acceptable that there is just not enough Government funding available for vital research into brain tumors to be developed. It is not right that brain tumors are considered as rare, purely due to lack of awareness. We are making it our mission to change this, to fight for others in Aaron's name, in the hope, that one day, no other family will have to face the darkness we, and so many others before, have been forced to.
