Wrexham’s USA Invasion: Game tickets are purchased. Hotels secured. Flights booked. Pregame venues and/or tailgating is set. Postgame celebrations are being discussed. As photos from players and die hard Welsh fans who’ve traveled across the pond are being shared across social media forums, the prospect of actually seeing the Wrexham lads play a match is becoming very real.
Recently, the Red Dragons hopped a plane to play in the good ol’ U.S. A. For the second time since April, Wrexham FC is on U.S. soil. This go around, they face off in a series of friendly matches against Chelsea (Wednesday, 7.19), LA Galaxy II (Saturday, 7.22), Manchester United (Tuesday, 7.25) and Bethlehem Steel (Saturday, 7.29) and the American supporters are. Here. For. It!
Since the tour was announced and dates confirmed, the excitement among American fans of Wrexham has been mounting. We Americans are ready to join with Welsh fans in cheering on (and hopefully celebrating) the football club as they hit the pitch. For most, these will be the first time they see Wrexham play live.
For me, as we draw closer to the games, the anticipation is akin to Christmas Eve. I used to go to bed and try to go to sleep knowing that in the morning, I will find merrily wrapped presents under the Christmas tree. As an adult, I’m ready to go to bed and try to go to sleep knowing that in the morning I will get to see Super Ben Foster in goal, The White Pele, that lanky striker who was what we need and, of course, Super Paul Mullin. Yes, Virginia, there really is a Santa Clause!
